10 Mistakes You Make In Digital Marketing — Part 1

Content that just blasts your features and benefits. Rushing to the next hot channel or site. Bombarding your customer with irrelevant offers.

What mistakes are you making in your digital marketing?

Ryan Deiss and Russ Henneberry have identified 10 of the most common digital marketing mistakes in their new book Digital Marketing for Dummies.

I am a sucker for dummies books (hold the jokes, please) which get you up to speed fast on best practices ideas and insights.

Here are five of Ryan and Russ’s 10 mistakes in part one of this post. The remaining five are in part 2 later this week:

  1. Focusing on eyeballs instead of offers — eyeballs can be bought, but the story and offers that you deliver to those eyeballs are the biggest difference makers. So, pay more attention to what you are offering to meets the desires of your market. First, prove the offer and then turn on the traffic.
  2. Failing to talk about your customers and their problems — people don’t care about your product; they care about how your product can make their life better. Ditch the talk about product features, and instead describe how your product can transform the customer in a relevant and powerful way.
  3. Asking prospects for too much, too soon — your offers will benefit by progressing in the same way that people develop normal and healthy human relationships. Relationships go through a process just like business relationships do.
  4. Unwilling to pay for traffic — reliable and high quality website traffic is bought and sold like grain or gasoline. Reliable website traffic is a commodity, and if you want to market at scale, you need to go to the traffic store and buy it – – Google, Bing, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, and more.
  5. Being product-centric – businesses that last define themselves by the market they serve and not the products they sell. A product does not a business make. Identify who you are serving and advocate for that market by creating the products and services your customers desire and need.
